Woods Lake Backpacking Trip

July 2007
Attendance:
Scouts: Mathew, Robert Sherly, Joseph Krieg
Adults: Sandra & Ike Krieg
Location: Woods Lake is off of HWY 88 about 1 mile West of the Carson Pass Information Center

We arrived Friday and camped overnight at Woods Lake. The campground was full so we used the overflow camping area. Saturday morning we broke camp, strapped on our backpacks and headed up the trail to Round Top Lake. The hike was about 3 miles long and we ascended from 8,000 feet to 9,000 feet. The hike was a steady uphill climb which took about 3 hours. Most of the trail was under the canopy of pine and fir trees. The last quarter of the trip was in open terrain where we could enjoy great vistas of the surrounding mountain ranges. Beautiful wild flowers were everywhere. A small cascading stream coming from Round Top Lake was crossed a couple of times. Our campsite over looked the lake which was feed by snow melt coming off of the Three Sister mountains and Round Top mountain which towered above us at 10,000 feet. The rest of the day was spent setting up camp, exploring the area, pumping water from the lake through a water purifier, making dinner and enjoying a wonderful sunset. As nightfall descended brilliant stars peered down upon us. The wind picked up and shook the tents all night long. I got very little sleep. We were greeted in the morning with the warmth of the sun and a crystal blue sky. After a great breakfast of oatmeal we broke camp and hiked down to Winnamuck (sp?) Lake. A few attempts were made to get in the water but our ankles quickly became somewhat numb. From here we made our way back down to Woods Lake to finish our 5.5 mile loop. This trip is a great weekend getaway.
