Grover Hot Springs

On Saturday September 5 through Monday 7th (Labor day weekend),
seventeen of us (9 Scouts and 8 adults) went for a two night campout
at Grover Hot Springs.  On the first day, after we set up camp, most
of us went to the hot springs. We walked through a large grassy meadow
surrounded on a path with a few swampy spots. The water that comes out
of the springs is about 140 degrees F so they have a cooling system to
cool the water down to 102 degrees. The pool is big enough for 40
people to soak in. There is a cold pool next to it for a maximum of 25
people. You can go back and forth as desired. The cold pool wasn't
very cold so it was pleasant at either pool. That night the younger
scouts with some supervision made sloppy joe's for dinner and the
scouts roasted marshmallows over a bonfire for dessert. On Sunday, we
made a picnic lunch and did a 3 mile round trip hike to a small
waterfall and pond. Mr. Krieg and two other scouts actually went into
the cold water. They said it was very refreshing. Along the way, Mr.
Krieg helped the younger kids learn about plant and animal life in the
area. After the hike, we again visited the springs. When there was
time, the kids played card games and football. That night, the boys
made Jambalaya and we had dutch oven peach cobbler for dessert. Sunday
night, a bear visited the campground but no one had a close encounter
with the bear as far as we know. Monday, after the boys served
scrambled eggs and sausage and everyone cleaned up, we made our way
back down the mountain. Overall, everyone enjoyed themselves. We were
also lucky with the weather. It was sunny and warm with gusts of wind
which increased in the evening. Our campsite was fairly wind protected
so we were not hampered at all by the wind.
